Hi and welcome back to Life Captured! Today, we’re talking about the great daily metamorphosis. You know the one: where your sweet, halo-wearing “little angel” steps onto a yellow bus and, presto change-o—becomes the bus driver’s “little devil.”
I get it. At home, they’re precious. But once those folding doors hiss shut, it’s a whole different ballgame. To keep the peace (and everyone’s sanity), we’ve got to talk about Bus Safety Rules.
Remember, your driver’s primary goal is to get your child from Point A to Point B without needing a silent retreat in a dark room afterward. To help them focus on the road instead of the chaos in the rearview, here’s the “Magic Four” for the kids:
- Seat to Seat: Bottoms stay on the plastic. No exceptions.
- Back to Back: Your back belongs against the seat, not twisted around to see who’s eating glue in row 12.
- Out of the Aisle: Keep legs, bags, and imaginary friends out of the walkway.
- Inside Voices: If the driver can hear what you had for breakfast from 40 feet away, you’re doing it wrong.
The Reality Check: Our drivers are talented, but they haven’t mastered the art of growing eyes in the back of their heads just yet. Their eyes are glued to the road to keep everyone safe. They can’t see every poked rib or stolen pencil, so it’s up to our little “angels” to keep the horns tucked in until they get home!
The “Yellow Fortress” vs. Physics:
Look, I view your kids as my kids. I’m the “Bus Parent” for those thirty minutes or an hour a day, and I’d hate for even a hair on their heads to be ruffled.
Now, here’s a little bit of scary science made simple: Your average school bus is a tank. If a car hits us, the bus likely won’t tip over; but it will lurch. It’s that sudden scoot forward or backward that turns a “Little Angel” into a “Flying Angel” if they aren’t sitting right.
Let’s help our drivers get everyone home in one piece; preferably with their hearing intact.

Oh yes, kids in a bus can be very irritating. I do not know how my kids -when they were school-kids did behave..but when I go by bus, which happens seldomely, and there are kids in the bus I can imagine, how it must be as driver of a school bus where fourty kids or more make noise and do not behave.
….even if they are angels at home.

I’ve been on many field trips with my classes over the years though I retired 14 years ago (I can barely believe that). And, I have the utmost respect for bus drivers. I always made my kids sit down and face forward. I wasn’t quite as successful with the noise, though.

Yikes, we don’t have schoolbuses in the Netherlands and I’ve always thought they were great. But it kind of sounds like a jungle in there.

I do not envy your job….I do admire you for doing it as I would not have the patience…I worked as a nurse in direct patient care for over 41 years and have dealt with people when they are at their worst…I like my alone time and I think that is why I have adjusted so well to being on my own since my husband passed away 2 years ago…We worked opposite shifts for almost 38 years…Decorating my home and garden has always been my passion and has actually really helped me with my grief journey…In 2 years, I lost a husband, a BIL, a Cousin, my last surviving Aunt, my best friend and a beloved neighbor who was my husband’s best friend. Pouring myself into my home and garden has given m the joy that i really needed to find in my new life….Thanks so much for visiting!!

This post made me smile, but it also feels especially meaningful today. In Belgium, just across the border from us, there was a terrible accident involving a train and a small school bus, and two teenagers and two adults lost their lives. It really brings home how important school bus safety is. Thank you for writing about it with both humor and care.

Good school bus tips that every parent should review with their children!
Do you find that drivers are more reckless these days? We often have to take the interstate highway and sadly we see so many people speeding, tailgating and weaving in and out of lanes. I often wonder what is is they are hurrying to?
What I never realized was driver’s passing a stopped bus with the stop arm out and children either loading onto or getting off the bus. This is very dangerous. Sometimes, either on the way to school or from, the child must cross in front of the bus. That means the passing car would not even see the kid until it was much too late. Do drivers even know they are legally required to stop at the stop sign the bus displays? It is no different than a stop sign at a 4 way stop. And the Stop on the sign does not mean….. Slight Tap On Pedal.
Overall, I do think drivers are getting more relaxed on following the road rules as well. Especially when I see other drivers putting on makeup, texting and even reading a book!
