Elevate Your Blog: Creating Clean Lists with WordPress Blocks
Hi, there! Welcome to Life Captured. Whenever I learn something new that helps make my own blog look better and feel more polished, I love sharing it right here with you! Today’s tip is all about learning how to give your blog a clean, professional appearance using simple formatting tools.
I just discovered something new for me. It’s remarkably simple, yet makes a huge difference in how your posts look.
Why Use Lists in WordPress?
Lists improve readability, highlight key points, show sequence, and prioritize information. Readers often scan blog posts before reading them thoroughly, so clean formatting helps your key ideas stand out immediately.
The Formatting Challenge
When I first created a list on my blog using the WordPress Block Editor, I wanted to feature recurring link-ups and post themes. However, I wanted to make it more clear and easier to read.
Initially, my list looked like this:
- HomePage (First Day of Month) Post your homepage link
- You Name It (Weekly) Photography, DIY, Travel, Faith, Parties Posts, no home page links
- My Sunday Snapshot (Weekly) A Post showcasing your photography
- testing
Having the title and description crammed onto the same line felt a bit cluttered. But pressing Enter just created an unwanted extra bullet point for the description line.
- HomePage (First Day of Month)
- Post your homepage link
- You Name It (Weekly)
- Photography, DIY, Travel, Faith, Parties Posts, no home page links
- My Sunday Snapshot (Weekly)
- A Post showcasing your photography
- testing
The Quick Fix: Adding a Second Line Without Extra Bullets
If you want to create a second line for a bullet item with no bullet, here is the trick:
Press Shift + Enter to create a single-line break before starting your next item.
By using Shift + Enter, your list transforms into a clean, structured layout:
- HomePage (First Day of Month)
Post your homepage link. - You Name It (Weekly)
Photography, DIY, Travel, Faith, Parties Posts, no home page links. - My Sunday Snapshot (Weekly)
A Post showcasing your photography.
Inserting an additional line break using Shift + Enter between items offers another visually appealing formatting option.
- HomePage (First Day of Month)
Post your homepage link. - You Name It (Weekly)
Photography, DIY, Travel, Faith, Parties Posts, no home page links. - My Sunday Snapshot (Weekly)
A Post showcasing your photography.
Quick Reference: Useful WordPress Keyboard Shortcuts
| Action | Shortcut | Result |
|---|---|---|
| New Bullet Item | Enter | Starts a new line with a new bullet point |
| Line Break Inside Item | Shift + Enter | Starts a new line without adding a bullet |
| Indent Item | Tab | Creates a nested sub-bullet |
| Outdent Item | Shift + Tab | Moves a nested item back to the main level |
It’s amazing how small tweaks like Shift + Enter can instantly give your blog a sleek, professional look.
