The Vanishing Art of Lawrence, Kansas: A Midwestern Mystery

Mystery Library Art Lawrence, KS

Hi, welcome back to Life Captured.

Have you ever visited Lawrence, Kansas? If you haven’t, it truly deserves a spot on your travel wishlist. In fact, it is famously known as a major college town and stands as the proud home of the University of Kansas (Rock Chalk, Jayhawks!).

A College Town with a Small-Town Heart

Of course, one of the things I love most about Lawrence is its unique atmosphere. It has a wonderful small-town feel that actually completely exceeds its population size. For instance, if you are looking for a scenic travel destination, the University campus itself offers a gorgeous attraction filled with historic architecture and vibrant landscapes.

Furthermore, beyond the university gates, Lawrence boasts a community that deeply breathes and celebrates creativity. Consequently, the city regularly exhibits beautiful art throughout its public spaces and streets.

In particular, the featured image at the top of this post highlights just one fascinating example of this public art.

Can you see what it is?

Take a close look at the image above; each side of this unique structure is shown. If you can figure out what it represents or what it even is, please let me know in the comments!

It’s an incredible puzzle of a structure. There is no door, there are no windows, and it’s definitely not a drop box to return library books.

I took these pictures about a year ago when the art piece was newly placed directly in front of the public library. It was a striking, contemporary addition that really made you pause, look closer, and think.

But here is where the story takes a sudden, mysterious turn…

When Art Vanishes Overnight

However, today as I drove past the library, I looked over to admire it. Suddenly the art was completely gone (every single brick)!

Did the city simply remove a temporary installation at the end of its run? Did the organizers move it to another corner of Lawrence to surprise a new neighborhood? Or did it instead vanish as quickly as it arrived? Ultimately, public art beautifully changes our daily landscape, and its absence leaves a noticeable void.
