(And a Blogging Lesson learned!)

Do you recall me mentioning I’m still pretty new to the blogging world? Well, here is a prime example of my inexperience in action! Thanks to a little auto-scheduling mishap, this post didn’t go live when it was supposed to. But hey, it’s never too late to share some gratitude, right?
Even though we are officially into June, I’d love to take a quick step back and share how my Memorial Day weekend went. Better late than never! How was your holiday weekend? I truly hope it was filled with joy. I was incredibly blessed to spend the entire time with my family, which is always the best gift of all. We had so much to celebrate, and I’d still love to share those special moments with you.
A Milestone Graduation
First up was my granddaughter’s eighth grade graduation! It’s funny how things change. Back when I was that age, we didn’t celebrate eighth grade graduation quite the way they do nowadays. Still it was so wonderful to be there and honor her hard work.
Celebrating Mom (and a Secret Recipe!)
Saturday was my mom’s birthday, so the family gathered at her house to celebrate. We made her favorite meal, chicken and noodles, and I baked her absolute favorite dessert: Chocolate Cherry Cake.
There isn’t a strict recipe for this one, but it is absolutely delicious. If you want to try it yourself, here is how I make it:
- The Base: Take a 9×13 glass baking pan (grease and flour) and spread two cans of cherry pie filling evenly across the bottom.
- The Cake: Mix up your favorite chocolate cake mix (I highly recommend Chocolate Fudge flavor) according to the box directions, and pour it right over the cherries.
- The Baking Trick: Because I use a glass pan, I have a specific routine to make sure it bakes perfectly. I set the oven to the temperature on the box, put the cake in, and set a timer for 20 minutes. Then, I turn the pan 180° and bake for another 20 minutes. I keep checking and rotating until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

A Little Post-Dinner Entertainment
My daughter actually handles her own waxing now. She even does my eyebrows for me! I didn’t get a copy of her original video. However, watching my parents’ reactions as they viewed it on her phone was too good to pass up. I immediately pulled out my own phone to capture their expressions. I was planning to share that clip here. But my son-in-law had a hilariously misplaced choice of words in the background! Because of that, I decided it was best to keep this video in the family vault.

That sounds like a really lovely weekend! I remember those Magic Eye books and posters.. I could never ever see anything “through” the pattern like you’re supposed to but I remember seeing those everywhere when I was in high school.
Hi, Joanne. It was indeed a lovely weekend. Just last night I was looking through the obituary. My mom said a childhood friend of mine passed away. I did like most others, or I hope I’m not the only one, looked up his obit. While doing so, a different high school friend was listed. As I was reading the others, I noticed the ages. They were 60 to 90 years old. Most being in 80’s. That settled deep with me. My mom is 80 and my dad is 82. Looking back at the Memorial Day family get-together is even more special.

I’ve been blogging for almost five years now and just figured out how to schedule a post about a year ago! So, you’re doing much better than you think. What a wonderful weekend you had. I love that photo of the waxing video! We didn’t do anything special for that weekend. I miss the days of going to the cemeteries and putting flowers on them. We used to take flowers from my grandma’s garden and decorate all the graves. Now, that I’ve moved, my siblings take care of our parents’, grandparents’, and aunt’s graves.
